🌟 As a well-being coach and 20 years spent in corporate HR, I’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact of strong leadership on employee well-being.
I remember reading a statistic years ago that stated that the biggest driver in voluntary turnover is poor leadership. Not pay, which many would assume.
I have probably conducted at least 2,000 exit interviews over the course of my HR career, and hands down the biggest driver for people leaving on their own accord is due to poor management.
Let’s face it, many of us have experienced both supportive and empowering leaders, and ineffective, micromanagers.
It can be so discouraging reporting directly to someone who lacks the ability to effective support you on your employment journey.
It happens though.
Especially in companies that scale quickly, or experience significant organizational change.
Companies’ ability to demonstrate consistent support and ongoing resources for their employees well-being can lead to dramatic and positive organizational shifts.
Research shows that employees who feel supported by their leaders are 67% more engaged at work. (Gallup)
Companies with effective leadership are 50% more likely to have lower turnover rates. (Gallup)
Employees with supportive leaders are 20% less likely to experience mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. (Harvard Business Review)
Teams led by empathetic leaders experience a 30% increase in productivity. (Forbes)
These numbers show us the impact of strong leadership and the influence it can have directly on employee well-being, in addition to dollars spent on turnover, loss in productivity, etc.
Leading with compassion, empathy, and clear communication can be a powerful tool in not only supporting the bottom line, but fostering an environment that supports employee growth and development.
Here are some ways leaders can begin doing this today:
- Lead by example: Demonstrate the importance of self-care and work-life balance in your own life.
- Foster open communication: Create a safe space for employees to discuss their well-being challenges and seek support.
- Invest in resources: Provide access to mental health resources, well-being workshops/programs.
- Prioritize feedback: Regularly solicit feedback from employees to understand their needs and concerns.
Let’s embark on a journey of holistic leadership, where success is measured not only by profits, but also by the well-being and fulfillment of our team members.
Together, we can create thriving workplaces where everyone can flourish.
Let’s work together!
